The Church of Castro de Avelãs preserves the apse of the former church of the Benedictine monastery that once stood here. The monastic community was dissolved in 1545, but the site retains an especially distinctive example of Romanesque architecture in northeastern Portugal. Built in brick, the apse displays decorative and construction solutions associated with Mudéjar traditions and medieval Leonese architecture, giving the monument unusual characteristics within Portuguese Romanesque heritage. The church also preserves the tomb of D. Nuno Martins de Chacim, a medieval figure connected with the region. Its historical and architectural importance is recognised through its classification as a National Monument.
