Church of Santo Cristo do Outeiro

The Church of Santo Cristo do Outeiro developed from intense devotion following a religious event recorded in 1698, when the first stone of the new sanctuary was laid. Its main construction campaign took place between 1725 and 1739 during the reign of João V. Despite its Baroque date, the building deliberately revives Gothic-Renaissance and Manueline architectural references. Inside are gilded Baroque altarpieces, while the sacristy contains a coffered ceiling executed in 1768 by Damião Bustamante. During the eighteenth century the sanctuary became an important pilgrimage destination. It is classified as a National Monument.
