Mogadouro Castle

Mogadouro Castle stands on elevated ground in the town and is one of the most significant examples of medieval military heritage in northeastern Portugal. Its documented history dates back to the 12th century. In 1145, Mogadouro was granted to the Knights Templar by Fernão Mendes de Bragança, at a time when the organisation and defence of this border territory were of particular importance. The medieval fortress developed in this context, with a detached keep standing within a walled enclosure. In 1197, King Sancho I carried out an exchange involving the castles of Mogadouro and Penas Róias, although Mogadouro was subsequently once again associated with the Templars. During the 13th century, the town received charters from King Afonso III and, following the suppression of the Templar Order, its domains passed to the Order of Christ in 1319. From the 15th century onwards, the history of the castle also became closely associated with the Távora family. The former fortress underwent substantial alterations as parts of the complex were adapted for residential use, considerably changing its original medieval structure. Following the downfall of the Távora family in the 18th century and the gradual loss of the site's former functions, the complex entered a long period of decline. Today, the most significant surviving elements are the keep and remains of the former walls and defensive structures. The square-plan keep remains the dominant feature of the site and a reminder of Mogadouro's strategic importance in the medieval organisation and defence of this territory. Mogadouro Castle has been classified as a National Monument since 1946.
