Our Lady of the Kings Church of Lamalonga
Classified as a Monument of Public Interest, the Church of Our Lady of the Kings in Lamalonga is one of the finest Baroque ensembles in the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros. Its interior combines painting, gilded and polychrome woodcarving and a remarkable 18th-century Nativity scene.

The Church of Our Lady of the Kings, the parish church of Lamalonga, is one of the most significant Baroque religious ensembles in northeastern Portugal.
The façade bears the date 1767, associated with the completion of the main architectural works. Decoration of the interior appears to have continued immediately afterwards, as indicated by a 1768 inscription associated with the choir and a painting in the nave.
This close chronology contributed to the remarkable artistic unity of the ensemble. Architecture, painting and carved woodwork combine within a coherent Baroque decorative scheme.
Gilded and polychrome woodcarving plays a central role throughout the interior, appearing on the pulpit, confessionals, windows, triumphal arch and altars. Two altars associated with the triumphal arch are dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and to Calvary.
One of the most striking features is the nave ceiling, composed of 55 painted wooden panels depicting angels and saints. The chancel also contains painted wooden panels featuring Marian symbols and invocations together with other decorative subjects.
Particularly distinctive is the Baroque Nativity scene dating from the second half of the 18th century and housed within its own cabinet. Its numerous figures depict episodes including the Adoration of the Shepherds and the procession of the Magi, together with musicians, servants and pastoral scenes.
The integrity of this architectural and artistic ensemble is unusual within the region. The church and its churchyard were classified as a Monument of Public Interest in 2013, with a Special Protection Zone established around the monument.
