The Pillory of Bragança is one of the most distinctive monuments of its kind in Portugal. Generally considered medieval, possibly dating from the thirteenth century, its most remarkable feature is its base: a protohistoric zoomorphic sculpture traditionally known as the Porca da Vila, through whose back the pillory column rises. Four octagonal steps support a cylindrical column more than six metres high, topped by a capital with cross-shaped arms and figurative carvings. The monument was originally associated with the area of the Domus Municipalis and now stands within the walled citadel. It has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.
