Torre de Moncorvo Parish Church, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and now holding the title of Minor Basilica, is one of the most important religious monuments in northeastern Portugal.
The present church stands on the site of an earlier medieval parish church. Construction of the monumental building began in 1544 and continued through the 16th and 17th centuries, resulting in a church of exceptional scale whose imposing presence dominates the historic centre and urban landscape of Torre de Moncorvo.
The building has an unusual orientation: the main entrance faces east while the chancel lies to the west, a solution influenced by the integration of the church into the existing urban layout.
The main façade is dominated by its imposing bell tower and Renaissance-style portal. Inside, the church follows the hall-church model, with three naves and five vaulted bays rising to the same height and creating a broad, unified interior.
The church preserves a particularly important artistic heritage. Highlights include the 18th-century gilded main altarpiece by Jacinto da Silva and 18th-century mural paintings. It also houses the Triptych of the Kinship of Saint Anne, a 16th-century work associated with an Antwerp workshop and regarded as one of the most significant works of art in the region.
Classified as a National Monument since 1910, Torre de Moncorvo Parish Church was granted the title and dignity of Minor Basilica in 2022.
Its monumental architecture, rich artistic heritage and historical and religious importance make the church an essential landmark in the historic centre of Torre de Moncorvo.
